Art Therapy

Art therapy is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that uses creative processes, such as drawing, painting, and sculpting, to help individuals explore and express emotions, process trauma, and improve overall mental health. Research has shown that art therapy can reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress as well as enhance self-awareness, and promote emotional regulation. It is particularly beneficial for those who find it difficult to express themselves verbally, including children, adolescents, and those who have experienced trauma or grief. Art therapy has also been shown to support people with chronic illness, developmental disabilities, or neurological conditions by fostering coping skills, increasing self-esteem, and improving cognitive and emotional functioning.

Sessions can be structured and focused on specific skill building or emotional regulation strategies. They can also be exploratory and free flowing to allow for more fluid processing of emotions. Older children and teenagers are particularly well adapted to art therapy as it provides an outlet to help them express their emotional worlds.
