Subitha Tharmakulasagaram
Therapist, Masters in Counselling Psychology Student
I am in the final stages of completing my Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. I am a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. For the past year, I have been working at the West Island Crisis Centre helping individuals in crisis who suffer from depression and anxiety. With a warm and compassionate style, I aim to create an open and accepting environment where clients feel free to discuss the challenges they face. My therapeutic approach is based on multiple modalities but grounded within a cognitive behavioural framework. By focusing on a person's strengths, I help clients achieve their full potential using incremental and realistic goal setting amongst other strategies.
I have been working within my native Tamil community as an advocate for the past 13 years. Seeing how the lack of mental health services impacted my community was my motivation for becoming a therapist. My involvement in the community along with my personal life experience have informed my practice and I strive to provide culturally-sensitive trauma-informed care.
